Arjuna Vishada Yoga

The Yoga of Arjuna's Despair · 47 verses · 16 tracks · Released May 14, 2026

The saga opens in silence before the storm. Two armies face each other on the field of dharma, and the greatest warrior alive asks his charioteer to drive him to the middle · to look into the faces of the men he must kill.

What he sees breaks him. Teachers, grandfathers, brothers. His bow slips from his hand. Chapter One is the honest collapse every human knows: the moment the battlefield of your own life becomes too much to raise a weapon against. The Gita begins not with an answer, but with a breakdown.

A trembling overcomes my body, my hair stands on end. The Gandiva bow slips from my hand, and my skin burns.

I cannot stand my ground. My mind is whirling. I see evil omens, O Keshava.

na ca shreyo'nupashyami hatva sva-janam ahave · na kankshe vijayam krishna na ca rajyam sukhani ca

What use is kingdom to us, O Govinda? What pleasures? What life itself? Those for whose sake we desire kingdom, pleasures, and joys ·

These very ones · teachers, fathers, sons, grandfathers · stand here in battle, having given up their lives and wealth.

Maternal uncles, fathers-in-law, grandsons, brothers-in-law, and other relatives · O slayer of Madhu, I do not wish to kill them, even if they kill me.

api trailokya-rajyasya hetoh kim nu mahi-krite · nihatya dhartarashtran nah ka pritih syaj janardana ·1.35

Even for the kingdom of the three worlds · let alone for the earth · what joy could come, O Janardana, from killing the sons of Dhritarashtra?

BG 1.36-39

Nihatya Dhartarashtran Nah

What joy in killing kin? · sin alone would take hold of us.

papam evashrayed asman hatvaitan atatayinah · tasman narha vayam hantum dhartarashtran sa-bandhavan · sva-janam hi katham hatva sukhinah syama madhava ·1.36

Sin alone would cling to us if we kill these aggressors. Therefore it is not right that we should kill the sons of Dhritarashtra along with our relatives. For having killed our own people, how could we be happy, O Madhava?

yady apy ete na pashyanti lobhopahata-cetasah · kula-kshaya-kritam dosham mitra-drohe ca patakam

Even though they, their minds clouded by greed, do not see the evil of destroying a family or the sin of betraying friends ·

katham na jneyam asmabhih papad asman nivartitum · kula-kshaya-kritam dosham prapashyadbhir janardana

Why should we, O Janardana, who clearly see the evil of destroying a family, not turn away from this sin?

kula-kshaye pranashyanti kula-dharmah sanatanah · dharme nashte kulam kritsnam adharmo'bhibhavaty uta

When a family is destroyed, the eternal family-dharmas perish. When dharma perishes, adharma overwhelms the whole family.

BG 1.40-44

When family falls, dharma falls · the cascade of ruin named step by step.

adharmabhibhavat krishna pradushyanti kula-striyah · strishu dushtasu varshneya jayate varna-sankarah

When adharma prevails, O Krishna, the women of the family become corrupt. When women are corrupted, O Varshneya, the mixing of varnas (social orders) arises.

sankaro narakayaiva kula-ghnanam kulasya ca · patanti pitaro hy esham lupta-pindodaka-kriyah

This mixing leads only to hell · for the family-destroyers and the family alike. Their ancestors fall, deprived of offerings of rice-ball and water.

doshair etaih kula-ghnanam varna-sankara-karakaih · utsadyante jati-dharmah kula-dharmash ca shashvatah

By these evils of the family-destroyers, which cause the mixing of varnas, the eternal jati-dharmas (community virtues) and kula-dharmas (family virtues) are uprooted.

utsanna-kula-dharmanam manushyanam janardana · narake'niyatam vaso bhavatity anushushruma

Those whose family-virtues have been destroyed, O Janardana, must dwell in hell indefinitely · so we have heard.

aho bata mahat papam kartum vyavasita vayam · yad rajya-sukha-lobhena hantum sva-janam udyatah

Alas! What a great sin we are about to commit · that for the greed of royal pleasure we are prepared to kill our own people.

BG 1.45-46

Yadi Mam Apratikaram

Better to be slain unarmed and unresisting · the warrior renounces defense itself.

yadi mam apratikaram ashastram shastra-panayah · dhartarashtra rane hanyus tan me kshemataram bhavet

Better far for me if the sons of Dhritarashtra, weapons in hand, were to kill me unarmed and unresisting on the battlefield.

sanjaya uvaca · evam uktvarjunah sankhye rathopastha upavishat · visrijya sa-sharam capam shoka-samvigna-manasah ·1.46

Sanjaya said: Having spoken thus on the battlefield, Arjuna, his mind overwhelmed with sorrow, cast aside his bow and arrows and sank down on the seat of his chariot.

BG 1.47

Arjunah Sankhye Rathopastha

The final image · bow and arrows cast aside, Arjuna sinks into the chariot.
